“Patton” offers one of the great marriages of actor and role with George C. Scott’s riveting portrayal of the notorious American tank commander. As a film biography “Patton” forgoes the rise of the celebrated general and merely hints at his ironic death because of injuries suffered in a traffic accident, focuses entirely on his military career commanding troops in North Africa, Sicily and France during World War II. The strength of the script by Francis Ford Coppola and Edmund H. North, as well as of Scott’s performance, is that the paradoxes of Patton are completely embraced. Not even Patton’s loyal cadre of staff officers can keep him from shooting off his mouth every time there are reporters around, but then neither German Field Marshall Rommel or English Field Marshall Montgomery can beat him on the battlefield. Karl Malden’s performance as General Omar Bradley is just as solid as Scott’s, presenting a man whose personality is the complete antithesis of Patton. Viewers find themselves identifying with the German captain who is the intelligence expert on Patton and arguably the only person in the film who really understands or respects the American general. But the more I watch “Patton,” the more I am very impressed with the battle sequences of director Franklin J. Schaffner (”Planet of the Apes,” “Pappillon”), which were staged live and full-scale without special effects of miniatures. Schaffner provides not just the large spectacle of a desert tank battle, but smaller and equally memorable moments, such as a soldier falling dead in the snow. “Patton” deserved its Oscars.

In terms of extra features on this DVD, the second disc features the 1997 50-minute retrospective documentary, “The Making of Patton: A Tribute to Franklin J. Schaffner.” Recent interviews with the cinematographer, composer, etc., are blended with audio interviews of Schaffner and Scott from 1970, newsreel footage of Patton, along with clips and publicity stills from the film make a fitting tribute to the late director. The audio commentary on the first disc is really more of a lecture on Patton by Charles M. Province, the author of the book “The Unknown Patton” and founder/president of the General George S. Patton, Jr. Historical Society. Province more than adequately fills in what the movie leaves out about Patton’s life. On the second disc Jerry Goldsmith’s Oscar nominated musical score is presented in stereo, including alternate takes and a series of radio spots. You certainly have to appreciate what Fox has put together here: This is a “Special Edition” DVD priced as a regular DVD, a real treat for those of us who remember being mesmerized by George C. Scott giving that profanity laced opening speech standing in front of that giant American flag.

The Fox “Cinema Classic Collection” edition of PATTON offers a far superior picture transfer than the previous THX edition. The new image looks to be from actual 65mm elements and is far less grainy than the old transfer, which looks to have been from 35mm dupes. However, sometimes colors are a little unstable in new image, with often pinkish hues and reddish flesh tones, but most of the time the picture looks fine. The soundtrack seems the same as the old edition, which was just fine. All of the extras from the previous edition have been retained, and the new commentary by screenwriter Francis Ford Coppola is interesting.

The recently released film documentary `Naked In Ashes’ directed by Paula Fouce is an absolutely breathtaking up close and personal look into the hearts and minds of the modern day Holy Men of India. Travel up and down the River Ganges and meet a variety of yogis, sadhus, gurus and sages as they dispense wisdom and forgiveness to mankind by performing austerities and rituals in an effort to combat the current dark age known as the Kali Yuga.

I simply cannot say enough good things about this amazing production. The urban and rural cinematography is gorgeous, the interviews are insightful and filled with wisdom, and the camera positioning is so close you feel as though you’re on the spiritual journey as a participant, not a viewer.

An added and unexpected plus in this documentary are some pointed, timely, possibly prophetic comments concerning the political climate of the country, the ongoing impact of the Kali Yuga on present day spirituality and the envisioned decline of ascetic life in India in the next fifty years. These insights interspersed here and there amongst the wonderful spiritual teachings conveyed in this film make ‘Naked In Ashes’ a truly intelligent, accessible, unique and important documentary.

The film also contains a mesmerizing Indian soundtrack that adds intensity and wonder to the already exotic atmosphere.

My Highest Recommendation!

Teaching yoga these days in the “west”, can be a challenge for a true Yogi. People want to simply do their Yoga-workout. Not many wonder how the Yogis of India live and do their routine…

I just had to find out… because when you learn what the real Yogis of India do, how they do their yoga and meditation and how they give up worldly things, and more… I mean, they do things, some of us would never…and it may seem very extreme…

Yet one thing is clear….they have discipline…something most of us do not have anymore….

I can only recommend to watch this film… and also “Origins Of Yoga” (which is more about where Yoga came from)… Both these films will make you think…If you are into yoga, even just a little…or into countries like India, or into spiritual things, history, etc… You gotta get it and watch it.. it’s well worth it, it’s informative…the picture quality is outstanding…such deep beautiful colors….and the music is very beautiful and fits so perfectly…. It’s def. on my list of must-see films….and it’s def. one of my favorite documentaries…..

I wasn’t entirely versed on the Charles Manson murders so this movie was, first of all, terrifyingly eye-opening for me. This is seriously one of the creepiest murders not only in Hollywood history but in American history, and the documentary retells the story in chilling detail with all the gruesome images to accompany it. Yes, the film is historically accurate and educational, but it is also surprisingly edge-of-your-seat and scary! If you’re waiting for a calm moment to take that next bite of popcorn, you’re going to be waiting a long time (like I was)! I watched this movie with friends for two different movie nights and everyone was successfully creeped out and impressed!! Buy this movie, you won’t be disappointed!

THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST INFORMATIVE VIDEOS ON THE CASE I HAVE EVER WATCHED..I’M SO GLAD I TALKED MYSELF INTO BUYING IT.THERES STUFF IN THERE I HAVE NEVER KNEW AND I THOUGHT I KNEW MOST OF IT..THANK’S TO THE PPL WHO MADE IT..AND FOR THIS TO BE THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE MURDER’S AND TO GET IT NOW WAS LIKE OH MY TOOK ME BACK TO THE ACTUALL TIME’S THE EVENT’S ACCURED.

My 2+ year old has loved this video since he was 9 months old, and it’s STILL his favorite kids’ (non-movie) video!

We bought a couple other Sing-A-Longs after this (Campout at Walt Disney World, and the Disneyland: Happy Haunting one), and they don’t compare to this one. Those videos star cheesy kids who “act” for the camera and try to be cute. The kids in this video are really there to simply help create the environment, even though you see the same group of kids throughout the video.

Plus, this video concentrates more on the characters and the attractions, than the kids (during the Haunted Mansion song, it stars only the Villians and you practically ride the entire ride!). Which makes it fun for adults and fans of Disneyland – it plays like a Disneyland home video! Also, this was filmed around 1989-1990, just after Splash Mountain opened. Which means you get to see several attractions and restaurants that are no longer there: the Rocket Jets, People Mover, and Submarine – all in pre-1998 Tomorrowland.

My wife and I agree that the songs are also pretty good, even the original ones (”Making Memories” and “Walking Right Down the Middle of Main Street, USA” come to mind).

If you’re a fan of Disneyland and Disneyland videos (especially to get you in the mood before a vacation there), this is a must-own.

My daughter loves this movie. She sings and dances to all the songs. The video is the Disney characters at Disneyland with some kids (not cartoon). They go on rides and just play thru disneyland. The songs are happy songs and you cant help but feel happy when you hear them. There is one “scary song” but when you see donald ducks tail sticking out the back of the sheet, because he’s pretending to be a ghost, you cant help but to laugh (my 3 yr old cracks up every time). I just bought another sing along songs because she loves this one so much. The video has: Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, Goofy, Donald, Roger Rabbit, Pooh, Eyeore, Tigger, Mary Poppins, Chip N Dale, Alice in Wonderland and the Rabbit, and more I just cant think. This movie was well worth buying.

Until CHICAGO reenergized the movie musical genre, this musical version of Charles Dickens’ immortal “Oliver Twist” was widely regarded as one of the last of the great movie musicals. Indeed, with its high-energy performances, infectious music, steady direction by Sir Carol Reed and glorious sets, this movie won the 1968 Best Picture Oscar over such formidable competition as THE LION IN WINTER, CHARLEY, and FUNNY GIRL.

Of course, most people are familiar with the classic story of young Oliver Twist, whose mother dies giving him birth and is forced to be raised under the cruel supervision of the English workhouse officials. When he dares beg for more than his meager ration of gruel, the youngster is apprenticed to an undertaker and his extremely nasty family. After escaping this hostile environment, he finds himself taken in by the roguish Fagin, the Artful Dodger(Fagin’s best pupil), and the rest of his band of young pickpockets. In time, however, Oliver will find his home, but not before dealing with the likes of the brutal Bill Sikes with the help of Sike’s sympathetic lover, Nancy, and the kindly Mr. Brownlow.

As musical films go, it is hard to fault the wonderful casting in this film. Mark Lester makes a perfectly, if maybe overly, innocent Oliver, while Jack Wild is a delight as the rascally Artful Dodger. Shanie Wallis is heart-rending as the tragic Nancy. Oliver Reed (Sir Carol’s nephew) is truly scary as the menacing Bill Sikes. Harry Secombe displays a glorious tenor in the comic role of Mr. Bumble, the beadle of the workhouse. However, it is Ron Moody’s fantastic performance of the rascally Fagin that steals this movie. It is not surprising, when you consider that he created the role when the musical was first produced in London. Of course, the character itself has gone quite a change from Dickens’ original, going from the debatably nasty anti-Semitic portrait of the novel to that of a lovable, if sneaky, eccentric. Indeed, Moody’s excellent portrayal would set the tone for almost all future performances of the role to date, including those of such actors as George C. Scott and Richard Dreyfus, among others.

Some Dickens fans may quibble about the liberties taken with the book, from the softening of Fagin to the elimination of Oliver’s evil step-brother Monks from the storyline. And it isn’t a perfect film by any means. (The child singer who dubbed Mark Lester’s songs sounds like she’s in an echo chamber of some sort, which makes Oliver’s singing a jarring contrast to the rest of the cast.) But, as a musical film, it is a wonderful entertainment and superb introduction to the classic story. As a result, this is one musical that I would DEFINITELY recommend.

The movie musical was on its way out by the time ‘Oliver!’ hit theaters in 1968. Happily, this marvelously fun and entertaining film swept the Oscars and earns my vote for the best musical of the 60s (although ‘The Music Man’ ranks a close second). Mark Lester is adorable in the title role and Jack Wild is a kick as the mischievious Artful Dodger. Then there’s Ron Moody recreating his stage role as the villainous (but still likable) Fagin. He’s not exactly the same character created by Charles Dickens but he’s memorable just the same. And Shani Wallis’ Nancy along with Oliver Reed’s Bill Sikes give the film some real dramatic punch. The production design strikingly recreates the feel and flavor of mid-19th century London. And the songs which include ‘Consider Yourself’ and ‘Oom Pah Pah’ are the icing on the cake. Do your family a great favor and add this timeless treat to your DVD collection.

This set is wonderful but, a few things have changed since this set was first announced. it was to be a 2 disc set and the 2 films were to be the colorized versions. What this set has is just 1 DVD and so both movies are on 1 disc and in black and white. The back of the DVD case shows the colorized photos which makes you think the films are the color versions. The menus also show colorized photos. The VHS versions which are in color looked very good but for some reason Universal decided to not include them.

The real prize of this DVD is the extra, which is Shirley’s very first movie and which has NEVER before been available on VHS or DVD or 16MM or any other format. “THE RUNT PAGE”.Shirley is not shown much at all during the 10 minutes this film runs. She is shown right after the opening credits and then again during the last 3 minutes. She is very adorable here and, for this first film short, she is wearing only shorts, she would be covered up more in her next 7 berlesk film shorts.

In this film short, she is aware of the camera and theres a few times where she is looking at it. She is so very adorable in her scenes and its amazing that at this time she was 3 years old!

You will really enjoy this film short as well as the 2 movies which are in super quality!

ENJOY!

I cringed when I realized that these Paramount gems had been rereleased by Universal, but I needn’t have worried. Contrary to the review previous to this one, the prints look and sound quite good, even–incredibly–The Runt Page, which is the oldest feature on the disk. The captions are, for once, quite accurate, and I believe there are some other language options as well.

On the downside, the only insert is an ad for other titles in the series–no hard-copy chapter list. It also seems to me that perhaps commentary by Mrs. Black (Temple’s married moniker) might have added value to the package.

If you’re not familiar with Shirley Temple, be warned: you’re about to witness a full-fledged phenomenon. Shirley Temple is one of the most remarkable women ever born, and is certainly the greatest child star of all time. Sadly, she–despite her subsequent political achievments–is virtually never cited for her considerable accomplishments by advocates of women’s groups, presumably because her political beliefs are “incorrect.” My response to this (and to them) is “phooey.” Her husband was once quoted as saying that he believes his wife “is some kind of deity”; watch her do her stuff and decide for yourself.

Now, isn’t it about time for Fox to do right by the little dynamo who single-handedly took them out of the red during the Great Depression?

Unfortunately, Little Shop of Horrors and every other Roger Corman Filmgroup production lapsed into public domain years ago and have generally been available on VHS and DVD only in poor-quality editions ranging from merely bad to atrocious. (The only Filmgroup features to get a decent official or semi-official release so far are Bucket of Blood, Beast from Haunted Cave, and Night Tide.) After researching every DVD version of Little Shop of Horrors available (there are at least eight!) I played a hunch and went with GoodTimes to replace my VHS copy, and I’m very pleasantly surprised at the overall excellent quality of the source print. When I saw the “preserved using the best available elements” line at the beginning of this disc I thought ‘yeah, right,’ but I have to admit that this is the brightest, cleanest, sharpest (if not exactly razor-sharp) print of this film I’ve ever seen. The black level, contrast, gray values, and shadow/highlight detail are fine, and physical damage is limited only to some very light speckling and blemishing (!!). On the downside, the transfer itself seems to be somehow deficient (low bit rate?), causing areas of flat white or smoothly gradated grays in the image to exhibit some very faint but noticeable pixelation or banding, especially during the opening credit sequence (areas of flat color seem to be DVD’s Achilles Heel). The casual viewer probably won’t notice this phenomenon unless it’s pointed out, but it’s there. That said, the superior quality of the source print more than makes up for this one barely noticeable flaw; this is still most likely the best edition yet available of this classic ’sick humor’ gem and well worth the bargain price. It definitely blows away every TV print and cheapjack PD video version I’ve ever eyeballed. Grab this before it goes out of print.
The movie itself still entertains tremendously today, a funny, goofy (dare I say charming?) horror-comedy that basically plays like a stage farce (most of the action takes place on one or two sets). The story is essentially a remake of Bucket of Blood with a change in locale and a few fresh twists. This time Jonathan Haze portrays everyschlep Seymour Krelboine, who lives with his alcoholic hypochondriac mother (she listens to KSIK radio) and works at Mushnick’s skid row flower shop. Seymour (temporarily) finds fame, fortune, and romance by nurturing (and eventually murdering for) an exotic talking cannibalistic plant. Mel Welles, in his finest hour (literally), steals nearly every scene with his droll portrayal of perpetually exasperated Gravis Mushnick, and Jackie Joseph (Andy Griffith Show, Who’s Minding the Mint) seems born to play pretty, ditzy Audrey. Corman regulars adding to the fun include Dick Miller (Walter Paisley in Bucket of Blood) as Fouch, a flower-eating client, John Shaner as a sadistic dentist, and 14th-billed Jack Nicholson (featured prominently on most tape and disc box art) as his masochistic patient. Shot on a shoestring in just three days (at least all the interiors), Little Shop holds up better than many big-budget comedies of the day (anyone watched Story of Mankind lately?). Much credit must be given to Charles B. Griffith, unsung hero/architect of the AIP/Allied Artists/Corman style. His list of credits reads like Corman’s greatest hits: It Conquered the World, Attack of the Crab Monsters, The Undead, Not of This Earth, Teenage Doll, Bucket of Blood, Beast from Haunted Cave, Wild Angels, Death Race 2000, etc. Griffith’s clever, witty screenplay is a model of late-50s sick humor, working in a dead-on Dragnet parody, some wonderful malapropisms and bits of wordplay, lotsa Yiddish humor, and a handful of his patented icky-creepy moments. (Griffith also voiced the plant, Audrey Jr., played a few walk-ons, and directed some second unit scenes, all uncredited.) Fred Katz’s memorable score is alternately goofy and spy-jazzy, and, unlike some of Roger Corman’s other attempts at comedy (e.g. Creature from the Haunted Sea), I find his touch just right here, ably supporting Griffith’s verbal bits with complementary editing patterns (check Sgt. Joe Fink and Det. Frank Stoolie’s hilarious introductory scene). Lighter in tone and a bit broader and more farcical than Bucket of Blood (which I personally prefer), Little Shop, judged on its own terms, is still fresh and engaging, though the low budget is obvious at times. I’m not sure how fans of the Broadway show or movie musical will react to the original (I admit to being a purist myself), but if they share a taste for low budget horror or 50s-style sick humor they’ll probably find it an offbeat treat.

Roger Corman’s Original 1960 version of “The Little Shop Of Horrors” is considered by many as a true cult classic comedy of B-Movies,even the most respected of film critics.Unfortunately depending on the tastes and opinions of film fans that were used to seeing this legendary film comedy through the public domain since there was a lack of copyright in the titles,(same thing had happen to “Night Of The Living Dead”) and for many years since the dawn of the videocassette and late late movie shows, those versions were vastly inferior and often poor-looking in terms of presentation and contrast. Now the great folks at Legend Films have finally put out a brand-new definitive and excellent restored presentation of this cult hit on DVD in both the original black & white version as well as the disc’s main presentation of showcasing a brand-new restored digitally colorized version too.As with previous selected Legend releases of classic horror/B-movies in their DVD series, the disc features a well-done and at times hilarious commentary by MST3K’s Mike Nelson and the great thing is that you can listen to the track on both versions of the film, giving the b&w version sort of a MST3K-flavor to it (I love how he refers to the opening Filmgroup logo as little Reese Cups !).Despite packaging claims that is the first time the film has been colorized,it’s actually the second colorized incarnation of the film.First colorized on videocassette in the very late ’80’s with lousy and at times amateur results, this Legend version completely blows away the first attempt and looks like it was actually filmed in color, but of course this films’ legendary budgetary constraints prevented from actually filming it in color.Of course lets not forget that the film features a very very young Jack Nicholson,in his fourth film role,in a memorable role as a crazy dentist patient.I must say, this Legend version of “Little Shop” is probably the most superior and sharpest looking out of all the previous versions of the film that you’re possibly going to see and no wonder it was transferred from an excellent 35mm print of the film ! Other extras, besides the Nelson commentary, round out the package including both restored color/unrestored b&w trailers to “Little Shop”,and the following colorized trailers for “Plan 9 From Outer Space”,”House On Haunted Hill”,”Carnival Of Souls”,and “Reefer Madness”.Plus a gallery of nine man-eating plants,if any kids are planning to do a school project on man-eating plants, this could actually be a fun reference guide, and also a very short clip called “Man Eating Plants” which is actually the president of Legend Films Barry Sandrew vigorously eating vegetable plants such as celery (always eat your vegetables folks !).Well-done packaging, excellent eye-catching menus and a sparkling transfer of both versions will definitely please any film buff, both Hollywood and B-Movie fans alike ! This is by far one of the first best DVD releases of 2006 and is highly recommended for old and new fans alike instead of those who only prefer the 1986 spectacular Frank Oz musical remake with Rick Moranis and Steve Martin.Highly recommended !

UPDATE 11/24/06:

Just Recently,Buena Vista Home Entertainment in association with Roger Corman have finally released an “authorized” DVD release of “Little Shop Of Horrors” as well as a nicely restored original black & white version of Nicholson’s debut film “The Cry Baby Killer”.Unfortunately, the recent disc’s presentation of “Little Shop” is in fact the ORIGINAL colorized version, slightly mentioned above, that was first produced and eventually released to video in 1987 by Color Systems Technology. The source print used for the color version (other than the fact that the quality was directly copied off a video master for the DVD) is surprisingly in quite good condition, but it really truly is one of the worst examples of 1980’s colorization technology I’ve ever seen and will probably be the last. The colors are often the same as certain objects (ie: the outside of Mushnick’s Shop and the greens for the flowers, etc.),tons of continuity errors (ie: clothing, signs, etc.) and does anybody wish to care seeing Audrey Jr. looking like a talking watermelon plant? Reportedly, that color version was authorized by none other than Corman himself and it’s easy to see why many directors above his stature hate and disregard colorization.Nicholson/Corman fans alike aren’t going to be impressed with that bust of a release and it’s very easy to see why the ‘87 colorized version was out of circulation for many years.Easier said than done, the newly restored Legend Films release is by far, hands down, the real winner due to the technology, version options, and bonus materials !

You want classic Sci Fi with visionary special effects and mind-bending themes? Check out STAR WARS or 2001! You want a zero gravity striptease, costumes that fall off at a moment’s notice, and a space craft with wall to wall shag carpeting traveling through a lava lamp? BARBARELLA fits the bill! This is the widescreen DVD version with no edits. Although I have heard rumors of a more racy cut somewhere out there, this is not the PG rerelease from the 70s. See the movie Jane Fonda wants you to forget! Too bad because she’s sexy, funny, and beautiful here. Groove to the soundtrack of Phil Spector rip-offs, watch in awe as she seduces … well… everyone in the film (incuding a female tyrant with a horn!). But still, it’s pretty tame and innocent fun. I watch this when I want to be in a good mood. It’s silly, fluffy fun! A pink bunny if you will.

This film, along with other stunning classics such as “Beyond the Valley of the Dolls,” are sure proof that the age of really, really bad yet good films is behind us. Set in the 41st Century, the hypersexual Barbarella goes in search of the evil renegade scientist Duran Duran and manages to stumble across what must be the grooviest planet this side of “Vegas in Space.” In her quest to find Duran Duran (”Pardon me, but do you know Duran Duran?”), Barbarella manages to shag half the planet and pique the prurient interest of the evil, yet uber-sensual bisexual queen (”hello, my pretty, pretty”). After demolishing the amazing Orgasmatron and getting herself locked into the queen’s funky chamber of dreams, Barbarella saves the day with a bubble of goodness and some help from her blind angel friend Pygor. The unbelievably bad acting in this film is very well counterbalanced by the fabulous Pucciesque fun fur sets and amazing special effects (i.e. Everytime Barbarella has an orgasm her hair instantaneously perms itself!) It’s impossible, given our current climate of cynicism, to produce good quality camp like this today. All attempts to reproduce a movie this overwhelmingly bad would just have to fail. Yet, I cannot recommend this film highly enough – run, do not walk, to see it.

I have this on video and I really enjoy watching it. I think the Flintstone’s version of Dicken’s classic is really interesting. The “Bedrock Bug” concept is funny too. This is highly recommended. Oh, I also liked the line by Philo, the cop: “You’d better get the stars out of your eyes and watch where you’re going.”

Well, I can’t say this is the best version I have seen, and I am not sure Charles Dickens would be overly impressed with this. And, I would sooner use the “Muppets’ Christmas Carol” to help someone understand the story. But aside from that, the movie is quite clever. Despite the unorthodox acting of the Flintstones, the Rubbles, Mr. Slate, Dino, and others, the story is told fairly well. What I found quite entertaining was that this is the first version of “A Christmas Carol” I have seen where backstage squabbles make up a fair portion of the movie. And in all honesty, there is something very funny about seeing the actors perform in at least partial harmony on stage, and then seeing them argue backstage between the scenes. And the part of the story which involves Fred getting too much into character is actually quite realistic. While this is not the best version of Dickens’ classic, and while I would not use it to teach someone the story, it is a delightful movie to watch after you have a healthy understanding of the story.

I admit it, I love this performance. I have the CD and the video and both have been played to death. The DVD brings the extra versatility of that medium, such as the ability to go to any part of the performance quickly, or to Gardiner’s interesting essay on the piece. My one minor quibble is that the red shifts in which the Monteverdi choir are decked out seem to glow; they do this on the video, and I was hoping that DVD would tame it. Alas, it seems to be a flaw in the filming.

The performance remains an absolute knockout, IMHO simply the best ever recorded. Followers of the devotional school, who go for Andrew Parrott’s minimalist version, hate it and will stay away. Those who like the CD will absolutely adore this, with choir, soloists and instrumentalists making full use of San Marco’s acoustics and odd nooks and crannies. The orchestra (the English Baroque Soloists, with 5 players from His Majesties Cornetts and Sagbutts) is quite small – it’s amazing how so few players can make such a racket in such a big space. The stars of the show is the Monteverdi Choir itself (singing from memory, without scores), which is simply stunning. You’ll never hear the big choral numbers such as “Nisi Dominus” and “Lauda Jerusalem” sung with such precision and excitement – they give me goosebumps on my goosebumps. And in the middle of it all is Gardiner, obviously having a ball. Three cheers for Archiv for bringing back this brilliant record of a unique event.

This inspired version of Monteverdi’s “Vespro della Beata Vergine” by John Eliot Gardiner I first saw on Christmas 1989 as a BBC simulcast. So many years later, as a DVD, its innovative rendering is as fresh as ever and the picture quality is holding up reasonably well too. For me this performance is still the best version of Monteverdi’s master work.

John Eliot Gardiner researched this work thoroughly. There is no gimmickry in his rendition, but it feels as if in his mind’s eye he had collaborated across the centuries with the ancient composer to produce a truly outstanding performance. We are all familiar with Gardiner’s masterly use of early instruments and the careful selection and balancing of soloists voices and this performance makes full use of all of this.

The obvious choice of the location for this performance was Venice’s San Marco, where Monteverdi spent much of his career. But it is far from obvious how John Eliot Gardiner used the near perfect acoustic space of this church. Every voice and instrument is placed just right to render a superb sound picture. The “Vespers” ranges from powerful full sound of orchestra and singers to intimate love songs. In support of the need of this diversity Gardiner makes the singers change positions to the various balconies and alcoves throughout the performance. This is a truly memorable performance.

I deducted one star of my ratings for the regrettable omission of the subtitles from the original BBC telecast.
