I’m giving this film 5 stars because it is in the runt offering “Christian” section; but I would give it 4 stars even stacked up against secular movies with a lot more money spent on production. This movie has everything; an unique epic, dazzling scenery, kindly acting, comedy, lots of action, heroism, sacrifice, character change and development, biblical values balanced by fairly realistic presentations of non-believers, a touch of racial and cultural tensions, and a sure presentation of the message of Jesus. The Christians exhibit flaws and failings; the non-Christians aren’t stereotypes. It’s family-clean and doesn’t compromise to train its fable, but it tries to halt in touch with the injurious side of life as well.

The rockclimbing yarn is handled with high production values. As a beginning/intermediate climber, I didn’t explore anything in the climbing that made me say, “Oh, reach on!” Many scenes observe authentic and provide thrills and frights. The interaction between the two main characters is believable.

This is unprejudiced a really noble Christian film, even if you know nothing about climbing. Bewitch it, devour it, spend it for outreach. It might even inspire you to learn to climb :) (”He is my Rock and my high tower . . .)

Warning: be careful of showing this to young kids. It does have plenty of risky scenes, a fight, drinking, and a death. Broad for teens, though.

This movie caused me to contemplate on who I am, where I am going and why. It caused me to question my motives, morals and faith. The scenery, storie line, actors, and tear-jerking scenes were interesting. A well done family movie that I am anxious to notion again.

Lionsgate has announced a current DVD release of High Noon with modern special features. There is what appears to be a advantageous represent, though unconfirmed, that it will include a fresh transfer of the film, restored by Paramount. The recent and older DVDs are only of average video and audio quality.

This a moral classic, combining frail Western themes with contemporary concerns about well-liked acquiescence to bad, done in a bewitching, modern (nearly real-time) scheme, with huge actors.

Town marshal Will Kane (Gary Cooper) is caught between his fresh pacifist Quaker wife Amy (Grace Kelly) and a felt duty to face down scandalous men coming on the noon impart to recall revenge on him (and presumably cause whatever other anxiety they please) . Most of the drama takes state in the lead-up to a climactic battle, as the townspeople resolve whether to attend Kane with action or to let him stand alone. Amy too must decide between her spouse and her possess proper beliefs. The tension builds relentlessly as we explore clocks ticking towards noon. The innovative unlit and white cinematography emphasizes the dramatic points, while the internal drama is captured in Cooper’s face.

The novel DVD features are these:

– “Inside High Noon,” a 50-minute documentary on the making of the film (gaze below for more on this)

– “Tex Ritter: A Visit to Carthage, Texas,” on the Tex Ritter Museum

– the chunky performance of “Do Not Forsake Me, Oh My Darlin’” from the Jimmy Dean TV Show

The features carried over from the new release are:

– commentary with Gary Cooper’s daughter Maria Cooper Janis, screenwriter Carl Foreman’s son Jonathan Foreman, director Fred Zinneman’s son Tim Zinnemann and Tex Ritter’s son John Ritter

– “The Making of High Noon” featurette

– “Gradual High Noon” featurette

– radio broadcast with Tex Ritter

Whether the novel features will warrant an upgrade is a matter of personal preference, of course. A 50-minute documentary could be quite appealing, if it’s well done.

It does sound tantalizing. The “unique” documentary, actually made a couple years ago but shelved until now, is by film and Gary Cooper expert John Mulholland. It’s expected to screen, among other things, the conflict between Cooper and John Wayne over the participation of the blacklisted screenwriter Carl Foreman. Given that the film is intended in section as an allegory of the public’s acquiescence in the Red Dismay, this will have more than the usual gossipy behind-the-scenes relevance. It includes interviews with three of the children of the principles who participated in the DVD audio commentary: Cooper’s daughter Maria, director Zinneman’s son Tim, and Foreman’s son Jonathan. There are also interviews with Grace Kelly’s son Prince Albert of Monaco, Western and film historians Brian Garfield, Lee Clark Mitchell, Stephen Prince and Meir Ribalow, and High Noon fan President Bill Clinton. The narration is by actor Frank Langella.

Lack of agreement between Paramount and Lionsgate prevented the earlier release of a restored transfer and the documentary, in case you’re wondering why this didn’t near out before.

(Amazon has a habit of removing or not even accepting outside links, but if you want to read more about this, some of the more enchanting tidbits are from a discussion at hometheaterforum. Fair do a web search for “high noon” plus “ultimate collector’s edition” or “inside high noon” and such keywords to accumulate the links–easy to obtain.)

A parting stamp on the ethical side of the film. While everyone can relish the strength of Cooper’s character and the disagreement to the weakness of others, which is no doubt the intended fair focus, we can wonder why the seemingly parallel choices facing Will and Amy are treated differently, with one portrayed heroically for choosing perceived broader duty over duty to spouse, while the other is seemingly common in doing the opposite (those who have seen the movie will be able to leer how that is) . I’m not clear writer Foreman saw that parallel as I assign it here, and maybe there are superb reasons to argue they aren’t really parallel. It could be a statement about the limits of pacifism, or it could be a reflection of other cultural mores that Foreman didn’t demand. Or it could be largely motivated by the need for a distinct kind of ending. I’m not a film historian, so maybe these questions have already been addressed. If so, feel free to leave a comment about it.

High Noon is a classic anecdote of a man who is torn between his duty and esteem. Gary Cooper stars as Will Cain, a sheriff of minute town Hadleyville, NM, who has impartial gotten married to Amy played by Grace Kelly. Amy is a Quaker and in deference to her pacifist beliefs, Will is turning in his badge. But honest as the newlyweds are preparing to leave town for a novel life, Will learns that a criminal, Frank Miller, he do slack bars is being paroled and arriving in town on the 12 noon shriek for a showdown. Tension fills the air as the anticipated showdown draws closer. Amy begs for Will to leave with her, but he knows he can’t urge away. He must pause and defend the town and his honor. Will finds himself alone in the battle as everyone in town, including his deputy sheriff Harvey Pell, played by Lloyd Bridges, have turned away from him. The film is unbiased a itsy-bitsy over 80 minutes long and it unfolds in essentially precise time on the conceal. Director Fred Zinnemann effectively uses clocks to whisper the time ticking away towards the battle. The movie is filled with tension as the showdown draws arrive and Mr. Cooper brilliantly plays his portion for which he won his second Best Actor Oscar. Tex Ritter, John’s father, sings the Oscar winning song, “Don’t Forsake Me” which perfectly captures the essence of the film. High Noon is not only a classic western, but a classic American film.

The veil is pitch dusky and we hear a assert…”I’m so blissful to be talking in the dusky as if I were beside you, and maybe I am.” The speaker is Guy de Maupassant (voiced by Jean Marais), and Le Plaisir is three of his stories filmed by the expansive director Max Ophuls. The connecting thread? That pleasure, or even cherish, lies in how people intermingle their lives, with a shrug, assumptions, an apology, a thank you. Le Plaisir is not so great a sophisticated film of attraction and hope as it is a film of rueful wisdom. It’s best to maintain in mind while watching this movie that while life can be enjoyed, there are times when hope can proceed.

The three stories consist of, first, La Masque. We are in 19th Century Paris at the Palais de la Dance, where sizable, swirling balls are held. This is a position where young women hope to gather pleasure and rich men; where veteran women wander memories and young suitors; where prostitutes and their pimps secure, where the men are young bucks and weak goats, where “rough cotton to the finest cambric” can combine. One slender man in paunchy dinner dress rushes into the palace and begins to dance with a glorious young woman. He prances and kicks, yet his face is like a frozen cover of youth. He collapses on the dance floor and a doctor is called. When the doctor loosens the man’s clothes, he finds…well, let’s say that when the man is delivered home to his wife by the doctor, she tells him a anecdote of the battle between pleasure and like.

In La Maison Tellier, we learn all about a cozy, marvelous and long established brothel in a itsy-bitsy town on the Channel wing. The bourgeois men of the town are as distinguished there as they are to their wives. Then Madame decides to end her establishment for a night so that she and her girls can disappear into the countryside to help her niece’s first communion. They have one or two adventures on the jabber. In the shrimp village they utilize the night with Madame’s brother and meet the young girl. They abet the communion in the village church. They glean flowers on the device help, and are met with well-behaved affection and with sizable gaiety when Madame reopens her plot of business the following night. We peep a touching yarn, as de Maupassant tells us, when pleasure and purity arrive together.

Le Modele gives us a anecdote where pleasure struggles with legal decay, where “happiness is not a ecstatic thing.” We glance a painter and his model meet, rapturously embrace lust and, as lust tires, recrimination grows. The cherish which endures as the epic plays out may not be most people’s understanding of happiness.

This is a marvelously told series of stories. La Masque and Le Modele are relatively short bookends to the major myth of La Maison Tellier. With this one, it would be difficult not to become elated and engaged with Madame and her girls and her brother. Even the puffed up townsmen are not without a sympathetic side; which man among us wouldn’t mind being flattered, even for a stamp, by Madame’s girls?

In the cast are some of France’s best known actors, including Claude Dauphin, Danielle Darrieux, Jean Gabin, Daniel Gelin, Simon Simon, Madeleine Renaud and Pierre Brasseur.

Please heed that the Criterion release is not scheduled until September 16, 2008. My comments are based on the State 2 release which I bear. I like this film so well I belief to rob the Criterion Spot 1 version when it comes out. After I have a chance to glance at Criterion’s extras, I’ll post an extra paragraph here about them.

This review is for the Criterion Collection DVD edition of the film.

Le Plaisir, meaning “pleasure” is a film based on three stories by Guy de Maupassant. Le Masque, La Maison Tellier, and Le Modèle.

In the first anecdote, Le Masque, an elderly man hides his age with a cloak and goes to a ball and dances energetically with a woman and he later falls down in exaustion. In the second record, La Maison Tellie, the women and madam of a brother go on a field run. In the third yarn, Le Modèle, a woman falls in worship with a male artist whom she poses for.

I found the film to be involving and liked the opening sequence with the passe man in the shroud.

The DVD has some astronomical supplements too which are quite proper. Todd Haynes gives an introduction to the film, also is a video slideshow with narration which provides the transition of the film from its script to its production, there are also interviews with actor Daniel Gélin, and crewmembers, Tony Aboyantz, and Robert Christidès. There are also alternate language versions of the opening narration in English and German.

This is a film that you won’t want to miss.
