I was lucky last year in that I got to behold Destroy Bill volume 1 weeks before it was released last year. I opinion it was one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen on film and went on to gape it eight times in theaters. I even chose it as the best film of 2003. Surpassing even the grand Lord of the Rings. Something I concept would never happen. Me being a ample Lord of the Rings fan.

So with such high praise for volume 1 my hopes were very high for volume 2. And it more than delivers. Where volume 1 focused more on the action and was swiftly paced. This one is at a slower budge and is more dialogue driven. Which is what Tarantino does best anyway. At approximately two and a half hours it is also a lot longer than the first one. Don’t exertion though Raze Bill volume 2 is not without it’s fraction with grand fight scenes and memorable fresh characters. The most memorable is Pei Mei the martial arts master who trained the bride and the other members of the Wearisome Viper Assassination Squad. Played wonderfully by Gordon Liu (who also played Johnny Mo in volume 1) Pei Mei even over shadows the distinguished Hattori Hanzo played by Sonny Chiba in volume 1.

Other memorable performances approach from Michael Madsen as Budd a.k.a Sidewinder and David Carradine as Bill. Madsen gives another Mr. Blonde caliber performance as the primitive assassin turned trailer park alcoholic. Claustrophobics bewitch caution the confrontation between Budd and the Bride is really intense and very claustrophobic. Darryl Hannah is deliciously wrong as Elle Driver. She’s about as harmful as can be. What should be illustrious is the fight between Elle and the Bride. What is unquestionably one of the most knock down, breeze out, intense fights ever assign to film. Tarantino pulls no punches here. Gargantuan credit should once again be given to the sound department on this one. You can almost feel ever blow. It is the best fight in the whole of Destroy Bill.

Never seen and only heard in volume 1 we finally gain to spy the performance we’ve been waiting for. David Carradine is of course large in the title role. He plays the role with such a laid wait on ease. Both intimidating and icy. You don’t know whether to sympathize with the guy or loathe him.

Those who said Uma Thurman deserved an Oscar nomination last year will probably say the same thing this year and then some. Where Thurman was praised for the intense action in volume 1, in this one she really goes all out. No longer a nameless assassin out for revenge she is now with a name (to be revealed in the film) and is now seen more as a person then a nameless killer. Not that the nameless killer thing was a abominable thing. It was a colossal action role. This time the emotions approach out. Thurman really lets herself go in the emotional scenes. Well superb of a nomination.

So is Ruin Bill volume 2 a superior conclusion? Absolutely. Is it as action packed as volume 1? No. But that’s not a unpleasant thing because we salvage more of the astronomical Tarantino dialogue. Was there anything I found contemptible with the film? Well, there was one miniature thing. The credits go on forever. So if your like me and you like to sit through the credits you’ve been warned. Destroy Bill volume 2 will not be without it’s enemies. Those who didn’t like volume 1 will probably not bask in this one. If you’re a fan of volume 1 then you should be more then contented.

Several months ago, eclectic director Quentin Tarantino regaled our senses with a visceral thrill-ride known as “End Bill: Volume 1″. This first half of Tarantino’s fable anecdote of revenge introduced to the enigmatic conventional assassin known as the Dusky Mamba (Uma Thurman) and the circumstances that led her to embark on a quest to `kill Bill’. Mamba miraculously survived an assassination by Bill and his modern hit squad (although her entire wedding party was murdered), only to waste up in a coma for four years. Once she regained consciousness, she began to steady brutal vengeance on those responsible.

In “Vol. 1″ she took out Vernita Green/”Copperhead” (Vivica A. Fox) and O-Ren Ishii/”Cottenmouth” (Lucy Liu) . The revenge was purely physical and graphically brutal. It was a veritable assault of visual images and thrilled the audience with the completeness and thoroughness of Mamba’s revenge. Fascinatingly, “Slay Bill: Volume 2″ is a drastically different film even though it continues the same record. “Vol. 2″ takes a more philosophical advance to Mamba’s revenge, whereas “Vol. 1″ was the more physical near. While more talkative possessing less action, “Vol. 2″ is no less effective than “Vol. 1″. What “Vol. 2″ brings is the rest of the myth that “Vol. 1″ rightfully left out. In this concluding episode, we now know more about the history between Bill and Mamba. We learn more about why Bill ordered Mamba’s assassination. As an added bonus, after seeing a steely-eyed killing machine in “Vol. 1″, we pick up to gape a more vulnerable Mamba in this installment. The combination of the two volumes completes this fable. One is the yin to the other’s yang. The choice to split the film into two parts now not only seems suitable, but important.

Doubts about Tarantino calm having `it’ should be chunky dispelled by this extraordinary cinematic achievement. “Slay Bill” honors martial-arts films of the past while setting a standard for future films to emulate. “Extinguish Bill” manages to thrill the senses while appealing the mind. Tarantino showed that he had this talent when he made “Pulp Fiction”. “Extinguish Bill” is the next step in the evolution of Tarantino’s work. Where he goes from here is anyone’s guess, but it has the potential to be spectacular.

obviously older, he faints. He returns to consciousness again on a gurney on his
way to a hospital bed. A few minutes later, while his parents are called out of the
room by a somber-faced doctor, David is left alone with his brother Jeff — who is
now 16.

This is ostensibly a Disney movie for kids — and later on there is a lot of comedic
Disney hijinks — but the first half hour of the movie, as David and his family deal
with the trauma of his time relocation, are some of the most heart-rending and
chilling sequences I’ve seen in any film.

Spoiler over.

This movie reminded me of some of the time-relativity sequences in Robert A.
Heinlein’s unusual, Time for the Stars. The characters are well written and the actors
do an well-behaved job, particularly in the scenes between Joey Cramer and Matt
Adler, as 16-year-old Jeff. The distraught parents, Cliff de Young and Veronica
Cartwright, are also wonderful — and Howard Hesseman and Sarah Jessica Parker
round out a immense supporting cast.

Special kudos are due to Paul Reubens (best known for his character Pee Wee
Herman) who was originally credited under his believe name for lending his boom to a
major character in this film, but had his name removed from the credits, replaced
by the pseudonym “Pall Mall,” after Reubens was arrested for alleged indecent
exposure committed in a movie theater seat. (I’ve never understood how Reubens
was convinced to plead “no contest” to the charge, after theater security cameras
showed him in the lobby buying popcorn at the time of the alleged offense.)
Considering that Disney’s Hollywood Pictures division released Powder, directed
by a convicted and confessed child molester, Disney should exhibit some backbone
and restore Reubens dependable name to the credits.

If you can salvage ahold of this movie, look it — and maybe Disney will perceive fit to release
it again — on DVD, I hope.

I have nostalgic memories from watching this film as a kid in the eightees. Along with “Discontinuance Encounters of the Third Kind” and “ET: the Extra-Terrestrial”, this was one of my well-liked sci-fi films. The belief of aliens and UFOs fascinated me. Unfortunately, it seems to have fallen out of circulation. Luckily I was able to accumulate a copy of the VHS some time succor. I hope Disney will re-release this film on DVD so we can perceive it in its unusual widescreen aspect ratio.

Joey Cramer is David Freeman, a boy living in a record perfect Florida town in 1978 with his parents and bratty kid brother. However, he finds his life changed when he is knocked out in the forest for a few minutes, or so he thinks. When he returns home, he finds that it is 1986. David has been missing for 8 years, yet David himself has not outmoded. David’s parents are now eight years older, and his bratty kid brother has grown up into a quite decent 16-year-old. David’s quest to obtain out what happened to him will remove him to an alien spacecraft speed by a computer named Max.

The first half of the film is structured like an eerie mystery as David and the police try to fraction together what happened to David. This is perfectly complemented by Alan Silvestri’s eerie gather. The film loses some of its mystery later on, but it’s aloof highly delectable. The spacecraft looks fabulous, and the scenes where David gets to coast the spacecraft are really trim. I mediate though I liked Max better before he assumed his Pee-Wee Herman protest (voiced by Pee-Wee himself) .

The ending nicely tied things up. Too awful we don’t salvage to seek what becomes of David’s crush on the local girl.

“Alexander’s Ragtime Band” is improbable entertainment in so many different ways and its chief fame rests undoubtedly on the fact that it provided a perfect showcase for almost two dozen Irving Berlin tunes that have gone down into musical history. Who can forget the magical “Blue Skies”, and of course the renowned title tune “Alexander’s Ragtime Band”. Twentieth Century Fox pulled all the stops out with this 1838 production not only providing Irving Berlin with a graceful showcase for his musical genius but with an opulent no expense spared tribute to the enduring talents of lead performers Tyrone Power and Alice Faye.

Tyrone Power has the lead role of Nob Hill raised Roger Grant ne: Alexander, an earnest young conductor in 1911 San Francisco committed to the elevation of swing as a musical force in its have suitable. The chronicle covers over 3 decades as we perceive his rise and drop and rise again as his fortunes change with each passing decade. Having unprejudiced previously worked together in Fox’s classic “In Broken-down Chicago”, Tyrone Power, Alice Faye, and Don Ameche were by this stage a well oiled team of professionals that were as effective in period dramas as they were in this production. Alice Faye in particular has a dependable showcase in this production with her development from the loud saloon singer into a world acclaimed artist in her gain suitable.Her recent deep smoky singing style in particular really suits the tunes she performs here. In particular her rendition of “Blue Skies” is unforgettable and really is the most memorable song old here. Tyrone Power was impartial reaching his peak when “Alexander’s Ragtime Band”, went into production. Her stout stardom came fittingly on Broadway where her name became sage. Merman is best in her musical numbers in this film where her terrific vocal range and delivery are evident. Her rendition of “Blue Skies” is also one of the films exhibit stoppers.

The Beauty of “Alexander’s Ragtime Band”, also lays in the immense attention to period detail employed here. Fox went all out as befitted a Darryl F. Zanuck production with lavish sets, fine costumes and brisk energic direction by the legendary Henry King who always worked so well with Tyrone Power. Indeed the observe of this film is really discover stopping and it was Fox’s most expensive production that year. All the grief resulted in a fair six Academy Award nominations including one for Best Recount, it being a rare honour for a musical to be included in that category.

Another sizable disappointment from Fox Home Video. “Alexander’s Ragtime Band” was 20th Century-Fox’s most prestigious production of 1938, featuring three of the studio’s biggest box office draws (Tyrone Power, Alice Faye, and Don Ameche) ; a satisfactory supporting cast led by Ethel Merman, Jean Hersholt, and John Carradine; outstanding direction by conventional Henry King; and a puny but sharp script that showcased more than two dozen of prolific songwriter Irving Berlin’s most beloved melodies. The prototype for the colossal budget musicals that Fox would perfect in the 1940’s, the film was a mountainous hit with the public and critics alike, garnering six Oscar nominations (including Best Record) and winning the statuette for Best Music Scoring.

One might believe that Fox would buy special care in mastering such a revered film for its DVD release – especially when releasing it under the Fox “Studio Classics” banner – but one would be sinful. Although the film’s soundtrack has been painstakingly preserved, the visuals are inexcusably shoddy. Specifically, there is a visual noise line that appears in the midst of Chapter 8 (during the song “Now It Can Be Told”) and continues to disrupt the represent for the remaining hour or so of the film. This distortion never appeared on the various prints shown on pay cable stations during the past 20 years, and should not appear in a home video release that purports to be “restored”.

This major and scandalous glitch is especially upsetting because the rest of the DVD is so inspiring. The extras include 3 rarely seen musical sequences that were deleted from the final slash of the film; the Recent Theatrical Trailer; Fox Movietone News footage of the film’s British premiere (moving to gaze the English hoopla surrounding this quintessentially American feature) ; and best of all, the full-length A&E Biography segment, “Alice Faye: The Girl Next Door”. If only the film itself were as lovingly presented as the astounding bonus materials, this would be a must-have DVD. A pity.

Wow, what a movie experience! “Kagemusha (The Shadow Warrior) ” is my accepted film from boom Akira Kurosawa, which is saying one heck of a lot when one considers “Rashomon”, “Seven Samurai”, and “Ran”. I sat riveted to the television cover during the entire presentation. It is a sage of a petty thief who, because he looks very mighty like the big Warlord Shingen, is given the chance to redeem himself and play the ample Warlord’s double. The heart of the film is the inner change and novel found strength that progresses through the thief as he learns to become the Warlord. Awesome in its imagery, “Kagemusha” will mesmerize you and recede you. Between 1 and 10, this much Kurosawa classic gets a 10. With his passing, along with Stanley Kubrick, the world has lost two immense treasures.

KAGEMUSHA is the enormous 1980 drama enchanting a clan of 16th-Century Japanese warlords who want to deceive their enemies by having a celebrated thief impersonate their murdered leader. This is a thought-provoking film about reality and illusion, as well as a visually exciting work filled with many striking scenes and compositions that Kurosawa films are known for. A memorable 6-minute opening shot of three identical-looking men, an define dream sequence, and a harrowing montage of the aftermath of the final battle are among some of Kurosawa’s finest moments in his long film career. Lead actor Tatsuya Nakadai was only in his 40s when he made KAGEMUSHA, playing a powerful older man and effectively conveying the guile and conflicted feelings of the imposter. Nakadai would also play the lead role in Kurosawa’s next film, RAN, 5 years later, again unrecognizably playing a mighty older man.

Criterion has released the definitive video edition for KAGEMUSHA: a Region-1, 2-disc DVD of the uncut, 180-minute version of film. The anamorphic widescreen video quality is generally very marvelous, except for some occasional graininess. The current Japanese audio is in Dolby Digital 4.0 surround (3 front, and 1 mono rear channels), although surround effects are infrequently conventional.

The best supplement on the disc is Stephen Prince’s full-length audio commentary, which, due to the film’s length, is able to define on many topics in spacious details. Noteworthy of Prince’s narration (I would say half of it) is more on the historical background of the film’s period than the filmmaking and art of the film. He compares definite station details against historical facts to demonstrate how Kurosawa uses his artistic license to remark his have ideas. Regarding the film itself, he emphasizes that this is an atypical Kurosawa film in that its hero tries to conform to the prevailing social order, unlike the nonconformist rebels and outcasts in past films such as SEVEN SAMURAI or YOJIMBO. On the film’s artistry, he observantly points out that in a film about illusions, many of the key events in the dwelling are aptly NOT shown on cloak. He also provides a spacious analysis on Kurosawa’s most justify dream sequence.

Prince also does a pleasurable job of pointing out the differences between the shortened, 162-min international version and this 180-min uncut version. The longer version does not have “20 minutes of footage consuming Kenshin Uesugi”, as misreported at IMDB. The added scenes are, in fact, merely short, trimmed scenes and shots that are sprinkled all over the film. They add to the overall continuity, without altering anything in the main area line. A majority of the added scenes are unprejudiced too trivial to mention or to even ogle. The few remarkable ones include a grand longer montage of the aftermath of the final battle, and a wholly added scene where the deceptive Shingen is being examined by the Jesuit priest physician — this scene also has the sizable Takashi Shimura’s only appearance in the film, seen for the first time on this DVD by viewers outside of Japan.

For Kurosawa fans, the second best feature on the disc is perhaps the collection of impressionistic paintings by Kurosawa that were later old-fashioned by him as storyboards for the film. In a 41-minute segment called “Image: Kurosawa’s Continuity”, hundreds of such paintings are shown, accompanied by sound clips from the films. In a tranquil gallery fragment called “A Vision Realized”, there are about 20 of the paintings placed side by side with composed photos from the film. Many of these same paintings are also reprinted on the 45-page booklet that comes with this DVD.

The booklet also include 3 astonishing essays. As is usually the case, Criterion took the grief of including different writings that don’t duplicate one another. One essay deals with the film itself, its art and its history. Another one is a Sight-and-Sound interview with Kurosawa. The third one covers Kurosawa himself biographically.

The disc also comes with a well-made 41-minute making-of documentary that is comprised of mostly interviews, stills, and clips from KAGEMUSHA. It’s portion of a 2003 series called “Akira Kurosawa: It is Astonishing to Obtain” (other episodes of this series are available on Criterion DVDs of IKIRU, THE LOWER DEPTHS, and STRAY DOG) . In Japanese with optional English subtitles, it has interview segments of the cast and crew, including Kurosawa, Nakadai, Kota Yui (the child actor, who is now grown up), and others. They report the challenges they faced, the artistic and technical choices they made, and a few laughable anecdotes.

Also included are trailers, a few whiskey commercials Kurosawa made on the state of KAGEMUSHA (other than the monetary reasons for which they were made, there is nothing special about these commercials), and a 20-minute interview segment with George Lucas and Francis Coppola, who praise Kurosawa’s genius and lament that the film business often doesn’t accommodate non-commercial films, even those by tremendous directors.
