Heavy duty, rock solid workhorse5
Had this pump for four years in my house and eight years in my businesses it has never failed yet. Those people who give it bad reviews often don’t have a clue to what a sump pump does, and the different types. Zoeller’s M53 shares the same dimensions and is nearly identical to the M57. The M53 has a cast iron switch case, motor, and pump housing, a thermoplastic base, and an engineered plastic impeller with metal insert. Like the M57, it can pump 43 gallons (163L)/minute, passes half-inch solids, and shares a 1.5″ discharge. Zoeller is the industry standard: don’t let anyone tell you differently. It’s the brand the professionals use and the plumbers recommend. If you need the extra casing weight and prefer a cast iron impeller, get the M57.

Great Pump5
Great pump. It replaced a “top of the line” Ridgid pump that started acting up. The Ridgid pump had the “industry leading” electronic switch that would not maintain water level reliabilty. I paid $100 less with the Zoeller and got a better pump.

The nice thing about the Zoeller it that it’s the same basic design that has been manufactured for 20+ years. It’s tried and true. Replacement parts are readily available at your local plumbing supply store.

As for the reviewer who had the switch fail. It’s a mechanical part. It has a rated life. It will fail eventually. As with any mechanical system, it needs regular maintenance. Buy the $20 replacement switch and replace it every 3 years. While you’re at it, check and clean the float, inspect the check valve, and make sure the impeller is clear and spinning freely. No sump pump should ever be considered a maintenance-free item.

As for not including an alarm… You can get a $10 water sensor/alarm from just about anywhere. Another common-sense thing to install when you have a basement.

This is a great pump. It isn’t exciting like the big box-store sump with a crazy horsepower rating, a high flow rate at 0 feet of head, and fancy newfangled electronic switch. It’s a basic pump that performs a specific task reliably. It’s the sort of thing you want in your sump crock.

Better Alternatives3
I’ve had an M-53 for 4 1/2 years now. Last week it quit and left me with a 2900 sq. ft. basement under two inches of water. I found that the contacts in the float switch were burnt, allowing the float to stick in the down position, and therefor not turning on the pump. After gently pushing up on the float, the pump worked fine. It continued to cycle for a day, then stuck again. Until I replace the pump, I have been monitoring the unit; it occasionally sticks, but, with prodding, it pumps fine. Zoeller sells a new switch and gasket for about $25, (the only remedy for this type of failure) but this is probably not economical on an almost five year old pump. There is no maintenance procedure to preclude this type of failure. Would I recomend you buy this pump? Not really, when there are better alternatives out there. There are pumps with internal diaphragm switches, some with sealed floating switches, and some with failure alarms, and battery and water powered backup systems. And there are pumps with lifetime warranties (Sears). Notwithstanding what you buy, you might ask why all pumps don’t have some kind of failure alarm to preclude flooding.

Ok, but there are better options3
I work on board tug boats in the harbor of NY/NJ and wanted a waterproof cold weather glove to handle wet lines during the winter, or to wear in a cold rain where every other garment of mine is warm and waterproof.

This is a decent glove if you dont plan on actually getting it wet. (putting it under a faucet isn’t really a good test). In actual use, I’ve found that the gloves are more water “resistant”, not waterproof. They start out fine, but after 10 minutes of handling wet lines, the inside starts to get wet and cold real fast. I still wear them, but shelf them for PVC lobsterman gloves when I know they’re really going to get wet.

On the flip side, if you’re only going to get them wet occasionally, or accidentally, these will be fine. (chances are though, such people won’t be shopping for a glove labeled “waterPROOF”). There could also be more insulation… in the future, I dont think I’ll consider a glove with a thin fleece lining to be a “winter” glove.

On the good side, the dexterity is good, enough to operate a handheld VHF radio, (dont expect to send text messages with them) and after 3 months of constant abuse, they’ve held up great.

3 stars though for not living up to a major selling point.

keeping your hands warm and dry4

I am pleased with these gloves. I was looking for something to snowblow with. Something that would keep my hands warm and dry. While they are warm, I was hoping for alittle bit warmer. Work well as long as it’s not freezing out. They definetly are waterphoof.
My hands never felt wet. The fit is nice. They are not bulkie which help in moving your fingers during the running of the machine.
I would recomend.

Great Gloves5
I love these gloves. They are very well made and fit great and are comfortable to wear. I work on the flightline at the 177th Fighter Wing in NJ and on the coldest days my hands stay warm and dry. I also have a pair of their non winter weight gloves which are also fantastic.

Great picture, much lighter weight, awful remote control.5
[May 20, 2010 update: I've had the TV for several days and the only other change I needed to make to improve the picture quality is to set the darkness level setting to 'darkest'. Unlike my previous LCD TVs, this required just a few tweaks for my own personal preferences. Unless you're going out to the movie theater to see that latest release or want a night out, you'll prefer this TV over what you'll see in a movie theater]

My previous Samsung 63″ plasma was a dud and I wasn’t able to exchange it for the same model since it was out of production. This model came out while I still had time to exchange it from Best Buy within the 45 day window (I know it’s normally 30 days) and not have to pay an additional delivery fee. We bought it from a Magnolia store.

By playing around will the cell light (now goes from 1-20 instead of 1-10) and brightness, I’m able to achieve an extremely pleasing color with reasonably good blacks. So much less fussing. The TV has only been on for one day so it’s far from being burned in. The default brightness is not maxed out like on previous models.

Having gone from a Samsung 55″ LED/LCD TV (very nice TV after days of tweaking but too small for my wife), to a 63″ Samsung PN63B550 plasma which was a dud (it couldn’t achieve anything close to deep blacks which was confirmed by a tech from the Geek squad), this TV with minimal fussing delivers a nice picture. In a few weeks I’ll pay the $300 and get it professionally tuned.

The good news is that the TV is now only 97 pounds versus 145 pounds from the 2009 PN63B550 model. How did they reduce that much weight? The TV still swivels. The PN63B550 had a very slight buzzing sound at the back. I haven’t noticed any buzz at all with this TV.

The screen is very shiny and if you have any windows or light sources in the background, you’ll find it very annoying. We keep one dim light on off to the far side so we don’t have any glare problems.

The heat output seems to be the same as the PN63B550 model and despite everything I’ve heard and read, this TV gives off far less heat than a 2008 52″ LCD TV or the Samsung 55″ LED/LCD TV. The screen is relatively cool to the touch and the back of the TV gives off only a moderate amount of heat — when I put my hand in the back of the TV I can feel slight warmth. However, we run our TV at night with the brightness set fairly low.

Unlike the PN63B550, this model is viewable from extreme angles. The PN63B550 was very fuzzy when viewed on angles. I saw this with the same TV at the showroom so I know it wasn’t just my TV.

The bad news is that the remote is positively awful. All the buttons are now dead flat and while I could easily navigate the previous control by touch alone I now find it’s a hassle. I’ll have to transfer the control to my universal remote. It also seems with each new model that you have to more carefully direct the control to the TV sensor. If this keeps up, I’ll have to place a sniper scope on top of the remote control. The good news is that we rarely need the remote.

As with other higher end Samsung models, this TV has all of the user menu settings (advanced settings, cell light control, etc.)

The TV comes in an incredibly huge box. While I normally save all of my boxes, this box is almost as big as the Smart Car and I didn’t want to use that much storage space.

The TV with high def input (e.g. Blu-Ray) is astonishing. I can’t comment on the sound quality since we use external speakers.

Aside from the crappy remote, I can’t think of a single negative aspect of the TV itself. I think you’ll love this TV

Customer Reviews:

Super Short!1
I was so excited when i got this game that i played it for an hour after i got it. It seemed cool but there wasnt enough things to do. All u do is find treasure (there isn’t many)and from seeing the movie u would think she found lots of “human treasures”. But really u only find like 10. I thought it was the whole story line of the movie but all u do is help your friends by doing things for them. You need to get 5 stones to open the reef door and when u open it u would think that it leads u to another part of the story. There is no ursula except at the end when u see her tentacles, no eric, no nothing. When u open the door the game just ends and shows the credits. I beat the game in 2 hours! I played it the day i got it when i got home and the next day after work and it just ENDED! I was so disappointed because I spent $30 on a game that had no story line or anything. It had nothing to do with the movie at all! I got sims 2 for $20 and that lasted a couple weeks or more than that. I was playing it all day everyday and it took me 2 weeks to beat it. But u can still continue to play it even after u beat it. On this game there is NOTHING you can do afterwards and it ends really suddle. I was PISSED. I definately advise you to not get this game if you like games to last a while and if your expecting it to be like the movie.
DEFINATELY NOT WORTH THE PRICE AT ALL

disney’s the little mermaid : ariel’s underseas adventure3
Cute game for age 5-6 but the problem is there is ALOT of reading, which means you sit with your child and do all the reading. We played for about 2 hours on it, and it’s cute blowing bubbles, finding treasures and singing.. I really don’t like the singing it’s hard to get the notes and you have to, to move on. You put the face to the mic and stare at the screen to see if you got the correct note and after 3 or 4 times your getting a headache from being cross eyed looking to see if you got the right note. If your child just LOVES ariel, it’s cute, but find it used so you don’t spend alot of money on it, you’ll be sitting with her for awhile until she memorizes the different things you do.

I love mermaids5
I love mermaids so this game was just perfect. It’s a treasure hunt where you get find treasure chests and all kinds of cool stuff!

Fear and paranoia seep from every wall in this tense and creepy psychological thriller from the producers of The Ring and Dark Water. Jesse Bradford (W., Bring It On) is Bobby Walker, fresh out of prison and living in his dead mother’s apartment as a condition of his parole. Plagued by eerie echoes of the dead trapped in the building, Bobby’s terror mounts as he begins to suspect his neighbors had a sinister hand in his mother’s death … and could come for him next.

Must see for horror movie fans5
This movie is one of the best horror movies I’ve seen. The movie is very creepy, tense and has some “jumpy” moments. The movie has a great plot, acting is very good and the ending is original. The moral of the story…the best part. Loved it.

What if you refused to help someone and they came back for revenge because of it?4
~This review will appear in the June 2010 issue of Twisted Dreams Magazine~

Have you ever seen someone in need and offered to help? Or are you one of those people who passes people by and thinks, someone else will do it – don’t get involved?

What if your lack of involvement caused devastating circumstances to the victim? What if because of your refusal to help, they sought vengeance against you?

Meet Bobby. Newly out of jail (and I later found out that it was not his fault and was reminded of how badly the American “justice” system sucks. But you’ll have to watch to find out why he was jailed!) and just wanting to start over again. He tries to pick up the pieces of what was once his life and moves into his deceased mother’s apartment.

And that’s when the trouble starts.

It begins with noises, odd and troubling sounds that wake him up and then the visions of his dead mother begin to play havoc with his mind and he is slowly sucked into a never-ending nightmare.

His neighbor, Gina (Calzado) is an abused wife whose husband, Walter (played with far too chilling realism by Durand) likes to come home and smack around on both her and their daughter, Carly.

Bobby may have been in prison, but he still won’t stand for his neighbor – cop or not – to beat on his wife and kid and tries to help…but things just start getting stranger.

The visions begin to happen more and more frequently and it’s not just Bobby who finds himself thrust into the middle of something he doesn’t understand. The visions also begin to manifest themselves to Alyssa (Warner) and to other tenants of the building.

However…the more Bobby tries to help, the more dangerous Walter becomes with devastating consequences to Gina and Carly.

But things are not as they seem and as Bobby slowly loses his sanity (or so he feels) he finds out the real reason why he’s being tormented and what he has to do to stop it.

This is a great Noir movie, simply seething with dark tension and chills. I sat on my couch, anxiously anticipating each scene and was so involved that my husband looked at me and said, “Holding hands with yourself, dear?”
I looked down and my hands were clamped so tightly together I was cutting off circulation.

Dark, tragic and with a stellar performance by Kevin Durand as the wife-beating cop that will leave you hating him, but feeling solemn compassion for him as well, culminate to a head in the explosive ending and you’ll never quite look at cops…or apartment buildings the same, ever again.

Atmospheric5
Slow creepy atmosphere builds into some very skin crawling moments. Like THE RING, This is a horror movie for thinkers and not gore hounds!

Clearing Up the Confusion5
There seems to be a great deal of pre-release confusion concerning what will actually be included on this upcoming set, and why. In the interest of sorting things out, I should first point out that although this is the first “Forbidden Hollywood” collection to be released by Warner Home Video on DVD, the franchise itself is not new. There were previously two “Forbidden Hollywood” boxed sets and a number of double features released on LaserDisc back in the 1990’s. Additionally, quite a few “Forbidden Hollywood” titles were also offered on VHS cassette. From the git-go, “Forbidden Hollywood” titles were only culled from that cache of movies that premiered during the few short years after the introduction of “talkies” and the imposition of the Hays Production Code in 1934.

During this time frame, roughly 1929 to mid-1934, Hollywood studio product became increasingly concerned with subject matter that would later be condemned as taboo after the Code came into effect; these so-called “pre-Code talkies” were filled with characters who indulged in premarital sex, extramarital affairs, and even gay and lesbian liaisons. Films touched on hot-button topics such as rape, abortion, feminism, having children out-of-wedlock, drug abuse, and other social ills. And mind you, these things weren’t just delicately hinted at in screenplays … they frequently were shown on-screen and discussed quite frankly. After the Hays Code was adopted by the motion picture industry as a self-censorship tool, this group of films was deemed unacceptable for future distribution and exhibition without judicious editing to trim out now-objectionable material, and so they became, literally, “Forbidden Hollywood” product.

This new two-disc DVD set will feature three titles, but four films, two of them extremely rare. The first disc will include James Whale’s 1931 “Waterloo Bridge”, a film once thought “lost” and for the last 20 years only screened at film retrospectives (and apparently once or twice on TCM several years ago). The 1940 remake starring Vivien Leigh, though a wonderful and deservedly beloved film, will not be included here since it is not from the pre-Code era, and was never suppressed as part of the “Forbidden Hollywood” catalogue. Instead, the second film on this first disc will be the racy 1932 Jean Harlow vehicle, “Red-Headed Woman”, which pushed the envelope back in the day for its bold depiction of a sexually free secretary who sets her sights on her married boss.

The second disc will include two versions of a single film, the 1933 scorcher “Baby Face”, starring Barbara Stanwyck as a blonde bombshell who – after being pimped out by her father in her own hometown – moves to New York and sleeps her way up the corporate ladder to the very top. Many film historians point to “Baby Face” as the single film most responsible for the introduction of the Hays Code, the one that ushered in an era of censorship that was to last for more than 30 years. Intriguingly, the version that so shocked the public was actually an edited version of the original cut, which then disappeared for over 70 years … until a complete print was found, restored, and finally premiered on the revival circuit in early 2006. That long-awaited, long-sought original version will be included on this set, as will be the edited version that managed to cause such an uproar when it played theatres in 1933.

And there you have it, the official contents of the “Forbidden Hollywood Collection, Volume One”, enough to have a large number of pre-Code devotees jumping for joy at the chance to finally see (and own!) some seldom-displayed jewels. Let’s just all hope that Volumes Two, Three, and so on are quick to follow!

An excellent choice5
The films of Pre-Code Hollywood (before 1934) have always held a special place in the history of Hollywood. The subjects were treated far more realistically than after the Code was imposed. This selection focuses on 3 films with 3 major central performances.

“Baby Face”, starring a relentless Barbara Stanwyck, is a 1933 Warner Brothers film which traces the rise and rise of a tart. Stanwyck was quoted once as saying that the film was slated for her to give her glamour but that is the least of it. She is certainly dolled up but it is her tough realism that really makes the role as she leaves a trail of men in her path from poverty to riches. The early scenes in her father’s speakeasy are particulary powerful. Look for a young John Wayne in the cast too. The DVD contains the recently discovered Director’s Cut before the film was hacked by the Censors, so you really get to see what the fuss was about. It is interesting to observe how the cuts did not destroy the flow of the story. Part of the Censor’s objections was that the heroine did not get her come-uppance so the tacked on ending in the cut version assures us that she ends up where she started, which was in fact ambiguous in the original version.

“Red Headed Woman” is probably Jean Harlow’s toughest role, playing like Stanwyck a heartless tart who climbs her way to the top. Other actresses on the MGM payroll did not want the unsympathetic role but Harlow, with hair dyed from the trademark platinum blonde, has the requisite humour to put it over. Parts of the film are very funny with Una Merkel entertaining as Harlow’s sidekick. The ending is hilarious with no contrived retribution for our heroine. The film really helped put Harlow on top and type cast her in the public’s mind even when MGM later softened her image.

“Waterloo Bridge” is the early Universal version of the MGM favorite, this time directed by James Whale. Film historians who have seen this version have always claimed it is far superior to the version starring Vivien Leigh in 1940 with a memorable performance by Mae Clarke. (By the way, that’s Mae Clarke peeking out of the DVD Case). It is a treat to see and notable for a very early appearance of Bette Davis in a small supporting role. Compared to the MGM film, this version is much closer to the original play, both in script and the way it is filmed. It has a realism and sense of tragedy which is more moving than the glossy tearjerker from MGM. Douglas Montgomery, as the soldier, is far more convincing than the starry Robert Taylor but you can see why it would never have been the box office bonanza the MGM version was – the difference between parsimonious Universal in 1931 and glamorous MGM in 1940.

The DVD set contains trailers of “Baby Face” and “Red Headed Woman” and a cursory introduction by Robert Osborne. The film prints are fine given the age of the films. The worst is probably the released version of “Baby Face” but once you have picked up where the cuts were made, you may not view it again, so it doesn’t matter.

The package would have been improved with a suitable documentary about the significance of the films, if only because both “Baby Face” and “Red Headed Woman” explore some interesting ideas about the power of woman over men. In both films, men are the victims, in the former of Stanwyck’s hatred and the latter Harlow’s greed. Both women use sex brazenly to achieve their ambitions.

Pre-Code Goodness!5
For many fans of Pre-Code cinema, the only options to watching the movies we cherish has been to fastiduously comb through television listings, spend outrageous sums of money on limited release VHS versions or pray that your particular favorite is released with a Signature Collection DVD set. Pre-Codes aren’t often given prime time slots and some of the best ones are still vaulted and unavailable in any format. Thank goodness this particular set is being released and may it hopefully be the springboard for the release of many other such sets.

As for the films themeselves, “Red Headed Woman”, “Baby Face” and “Waterloo Bridge” are excellent choices both for connisseurs and classic film fans unfamiliar with this particular time in cinematic history. Jean Harlow could not have become the movie myth she eventually did in the post Breen years. Stanwyck, an exceptional actress in many genres, was at her best in many of her Pre-Codes and it’s about time her fans got the chance to see one of her devilish best. As a fan of Mark Viera’s “Sin in Soft Focus” and Mick LaSalle’s “Complicated Women” who has not yet had the opportunity to watch the much praised Mae Clark, “Waterloo Bridge”, I cannot wait to see this particular film.

December cannot come quickly enough.

Here are three films that couldn’t and wouldn’t have been made at any other time. Contrary to popular belief, the history of Hollywood permissiveness, what filmmakers could “get away with” on screen, is not a steadily rising graph from puritanical early days to the party-hearty present. In the early 1930s, a national mood of shock over the stock market crash and impatience with Prohibition licensed a relaxation of the movie industry’s self-censorship policies. Sexuality–always a driving force in movie plots and characterizations, even when repressed–became a more explicit presence, with costuming that sometimes pushed the envelope for exposure of epidermis and dialogue that could be shockingly blunt.

Baby Face (1933) was made at Warner Bros., the golden-age studio with the grittiest style and the most street cred. The gutsy Barbara Stanwyck stars as a young woman from a factory town who hops a boxcar to the big city and sleeps her way to the top–a progress famously indexed by a camera ascending floor by floor outside a Gotham office building as she trades up, one corporate suitor after another. No other major-studio film was more explicit about sex as a tool and a commodity, yetBaby Face is curiously less sexy than any number of movies that weren’t so outspoken about it. This TCM collection features both the theatrical-release version familiar for decades and a recently rediscovered preview version that is markedly superior, runs five minutes longer, and includes more sexual liaisons. It also happily lacks an absurd final scene that got tacked onto the release version to explain how the heroine learned to be content with a modest lifestyle.

Red-Headed Woman (1932) is arguably the raunchiest movie Jean Harlow made at MGM (though not as raunchy as her scenes in Howard Hughes’ 1930 Hell’s Angels). Unlike Stanwyck in Baby Face–a proletarian heroine grimly selling herself to beat capitalism and the patriarchy at their own game–Harlow’s character brazenly relishes both the sex and the posh life it wins for her. The lion’s share of this sardonic comedy, scripted by Anita Loos and an uncredited F. Scott Fitzgerald, focuses on Harlow’s seduction of her married boss (Chester Morris) and the havoc she wreaks in his upper-crust world. Charles Boyer has a role (his first Hollywood credit) as a French chauffeur who knows how to give satisfaction, and the film’s air of breezy ribaldry even allows the star a casual flash of bare breast.

The rarest item in the collection, the 1931 Universal version of Waterloo Bridge, has long been unseen because MGM bought the film in order to do a 1940 remake (starring Vivien Leigh) and locked the original away in the vault. Directed by James Whale the same year he did Frankenstein (1931), the picture charts the romance of a chorus-girl-turned-streetwalker (Mae Clarke) and a well-born young soldier (Kent Douglass) on brief furlough from the trenches during WWI. Apart from a zesty prelude in a London music hall and two scenes on the titular bridge, the film remains yoked to its talky theatrical source, a Robert E. Sherwood play flogging the hoary conceit that no fallen woman, however pure of heart, could be permitted to marry into a good family. Unlike the Hays Code-compliant remake, the film leaves no doubt how the heroine makes her living. –Richard T. Jameson

Customer Reviews:

FINALLY!!!5
Glad to finally find hooks for my ladder that will not bend/break within a couple of years. Highly recommend these.

Good product.5
I am writing this review to include information I would have liked to know but wasn’t up when I bought. The usable surface area of the “flat” part of the curve is just about five inches. Also, the only hardware included is made for folks putting these in drywall, so if you’re putting them in wood, be prepared to drill a 1/4″ hole (it’s bigger than it sounds). That is, you need an electric drill and bit to install directly in wood.
Once installed, they are great. Very sturdy. All I could find locally were those hooks with screw ends. I didn’t think they would hold up long.

Outstanding Quality & Build5
This set of ladder hooks are very well constructed and the screw mounting system is very strong and reliable. I like the rubberized hook as it prevents the ladder or anything else you place on it from slipping and sliding. An outstanding product for a great price.

From the Manufacturer
Solid metal construction with no weld points. Durable plastisol coating. Mounts directly in drywall or into wood studs. Will hold step ladders, hoses, extension ladders, skis, lawn chairs, fishing poles, and tires.
