This is the first documentary produced for television that links America’s 9/11 event to the burgeoning army that defeated the Soviets in Afghanistan in 1980. That army came to be known as Al Quaeda. After defeating the Soviets this group of multinational mercenaires, led financially and spiritually by Osama bin Laden, decided to take on the other remaining world power, the United States. This is the linchpin for events from Sept. 11, 2001 and everything that has happened since that time.

This is a scintillating documentary told in allegorical detail of events around the world. It pinpoints the assassination of New York Rabbi Meir Kahane as the signature event that launched Al Quaeda’s campaign in the United States. Kahane had been a Jewish leader in New York that rallied worldwide support and opinion against Soviet and Middle Eastern mistreatment of Jews with great success. His assassination was a new entry in modern history and a great success for Al Quaeda.

There is so much going on in this four-hour epic that it cannot be adequately described in a review. The first two hours authenticate the historic development of Al Quaeda and its plans to destroy the World Trade Center. The back two hours are a blow-by-blow account of events leading to 9/11. This film moves at a rapid pace and is far more engaging than the movie HBO showed in the middle of the night, “The Hamburg Cell”, about the conspirators from 9/11 and their plotting in Germany.

Buy,Download, Or Stream National Geographic – Inside 9/11! Click Here

I urge anyone that likes documentaries, American history, or good filmmaking to acquire this CD at the earliest possible moment. Until another production comes along that casts these events together in greater detail, with better production values and a beefier script, this will remain the authoriatative television documentary on this subject.

Kudos to the National Geographic Channel for producing this outstanding program and taking up the gauntlet dropped by The Discovery Channel and The Learning Channel, which formerly did this kind of programming well but now seem more interested in televising “reality” programs about police chases and motorcycle mechanics.

The National Geographic Channel, which is currently airing an equally outstanding documentary on the failures of hurricane Katrina, is now the best option on cable for this kind of ex post facto documentary. This film is its best work to date and should be in everyone’s library that enjoys knowing what the hell is going on in the world.

I have about 12 9/11 DVDs and this one, without a doubt, is the best one. If you only want to buy one 9/11 DVD, this is the one you want.

There are 2 discs. Disc 1 is about 4 hours long and has 2 parts. The 1st part is a chronological run down of all of the known events leading to the 9/11 attacks. I have to admit that I was surprised how much National Geographic was able to put together. The 2nd part of disc 1 gives a minute by minute run down of all of the events that took place on the day of the attacks. Once again, I was surprised how much National Geographic was able to put together. You’ll hear accounts from those on the planes (via recorded phone calls) and accounts from those who were near or on the floors of the Twin Towers that got hit by the planes. These accounts are chilling. There was about a solid hour during the 2nd part of disc 1 where I had the chills. You will be utterly speechless by the end of the 1st disc.

This is a DVD that every American should see because on 9/11 we all asked ourselves, “How could something like this have happened?” Well, this DVD answers that question and we really should pay attention to that answer so that it won’t happen again. So many people could have prevented this tragedy and we didn’t.

This DVD goes in to a great level of detail which I personally like, but someone with ADD or a short attention span may have a hard time sitting through a 4 hour-long documentary, though I personally was rivetted to my TV throughout all of disc 1. I recommend watching the 1st disc in 3 or 4 parts, though once you start watching the 2nd half, you will not be able to stop.

This DVD is amazing! I’m glad I bought it and I really think you should buy it, watch it and remember/learn how destructive hate can be and how important it is that we all do what we can to prevent this sort of thing, because it CAN happen again.

Gospel At Colonus I have yet to see the DVD, but I have been looking for it. For YEARS, it was only available for academic purposes. I have only an old VHS tape off my TV. The program is based on the Greek play Oedipus at Colonus presented as a Black Revival operetta. One highlight is the appearance of an early Morgan Freeman as the speaker. Other actors include such greats as James Earl Jones, and the music is provided by such groups as The Five Blind Boys of Alabama. The program is superbly written and presented, and is a video and audio masterpiece.

This original performance of Oedipus at Colonus is truly one of the most remarkable adaptations of an ancient work for the the modern stage. Other reviewers have commented on the content and the action of the performance; I can only second their enthusiasm. I was blessed to see Gospel at Colonus live in 1996 when it was in Seattle. Clarence Fountain and the Blind Boys of Alabama are amazing live, and much of their unique energy powers this production.

I must now, unfortunately, turn my review to the production values of this long awaited DVD. They are abysmal: poor video and inexcusably bad audio. I disagree with other reviewers who assert that this quality is ‘typical’ of recordings of the time. (by contrast, look at the Great Performances live recording of the The Flying Karamazov Brothers production of Shakespeare’s “A Comedy of Errors” at the Vivian Beaumont theater about the same time. The two are in different worlds of recording quality.)

Running several off the shelf video processing tools would have substantially improved the video quality of this presentation. And while items like vision mixing, camera placement, etc. can’t be fixed in post production, the audio certainly could have been: the performance that was recorded live for broadcast was the same one that was recorded live for the excellently produced cast album, which has been available for years. Patching in the crystal clear audio of the album as an alternate audio track on the DVD is the work of about 3 days in a post production studio. Clearly the producers of this DVD were more interested in ringing the cash register than in providing the best archival quality recording of production. I’m tempted to do the work myself and put it up on fanedit.com because after listening to the album for years, listening to the DVD is almost painful.

So 4 stars for finally getting off the pot and getting this seminal work published. But one star lost for not giving a damn about what the quality of the product that they published. I’ll be watching this production company closely from now on and be more prone to *RENT* their works before I commit to buying them.

My son is 9 now and doesn’t play with his Thomas trains anymore, but he still loves the Thomas movies. This set comes with 3 movies: Come Ride the Rails, Tales From the Tracks, and Track Stars. He got this as a Christmas gift and has watched them over and over. This set makes a great gift for those little train lovers and you can’t beat the price!

This set of DVD is a nice collection to have if your child likes Thomas. It makes a great gift too! And for the price, 3 DVDs are definitely worth it.

I own all three of these titles, including Curse on BluRay. I like all three, though Flying Daggers a bit less than the other two. I’m not keen on a bundle-only option, but both Curse and Flying Daggers are available (from Amazon) on BluRay (both for about 1/3 the price of the bundle. Crouching Tiger still isn’t out on BluRay, so I can see some irritation if you only want that movie. That said, the bundle is a good deal if you liked Crouching Tiger and might like other movies in the same genre. My concern is whether the BR of Flying Daggers or (when it comes out) Crouching Tiger has more special features than the regular DVDs did. The special features on the Curse BR are pretty thin.

This is the only way to buy Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon on Blu-Ray in the U.S. The two other movies have been on Blu-Ray for over a year. Anyone interested in these movies probably already has those two. This set could be acceptable at half the price, or if Curse of the Golden Flower or House of Flying Daggers were new special edition releases. But at this price point, we’re paying full price for these older discs.

This is one of a handful of films I consider one of the most moving ever made. Director Yasujiro Ozu has created a symphony of the emotions regarding the relationship between a father (played by Chishu Ryu) and his daughter (the great Setsuko Hara).

There is a Zen-like quality to this and Ozu’s other great films — including TOKYO STORY (1953). At salient points in the action, the camera leaves the characters and focuses upon the middle distance, with sad orchestral music welling up. I am told that this technique is an example of “mono no aware,” or sympathetic sadness. Ozu does not hammer at the viewer: He knows when to pull back and let the feelings take root and start to spiral up your spine. It is an instinctive talent that few filmmakers have.

Ozu almost NEVER moves his camera, which he sets up on a short tripod about 3 feet high — just about the height of your head if you were sitting on a tatami mat and interacting with the characters.

I saw a recent documentary about Ozu in which almost everyone who ever worked with this quiet genius broke into tears. The last shot was simply of his funeral monument, with the same sad music welling up.

Ozu was one of a kind. We shall not look upon his like again.

In my review of ‘I Was Born But…’ I brought attention to one of Ozu’s subject matter motifs – estranged relationships between children and parents. Usually when the children are not kids – as in ‘Late Spring’ then Ozu develops this motif with the topic of marriage. In this case, the widowed father in realising his selfishness to ‘keep’ his daughter urges her to marry before its too late. This sudden parental wish is not without resistance from his daughter.

The fact that this film is ‘post-war Ozu’ provides an important contextual backdrop – that is, Japan’s fascination for things American. Moreover, it is the idea of marrying for love than for traditional duty. With much parallel action at work, the narrative is consumed with trying to match Noriko with suitors. At the same time, marriage becomes conceptually compared with other characters in terms of divorce and tradition.

Again, spatial violation and mimimalistic camera shots are prevalent. Furthermore, Ozu’s sense of graphic composition is superb here as each shot – be it an object or room – looks strikingly articulated. I don’t want to spoil the final scene – however I will say that it is one of the finest moments in the history of cinema.

See this film and you will love the father, as you will the daughter, and even the interfering Aunt. Its not just Ozu’s excellent sense of humanism but his ability to share the emotional resonance of his characters with the viewer. Wait for that final scene and be spellbound! Ironically, if it hadn’t been for Ozu’s estranged relationship with his father – he might never had so much tenderness to convey in his films.

Back in 1982, when this film first came out I remember being absolutely spellbound by the production. It was as if Conan had stepped right out of Robert E. Howard’s books. I remember some grumbling, because the script was not perfectly true to the original books. But, frankly, I did not give a darn. Valeria (Sandahl Bergman) was the perfect warrior maiden, Thulsa Doom (James Earl Jones) was the snake worshipper from hell, and Arnold Schwarzenegger was totally out of sight as the nearly inarticulate Conan. What a glare he had!

I don’t mean to slight the rest of the cast, all the actors are great. Garry Lopez as Conan’s sidekick and Mako as the wizard provide comic relief. And who can forget Max Von Sydow as King Osric. In a world that expected science fiction and fantasy movies to be hokey, grade B schlock, ‘Conan the Barbarian’ proved that it didn’t have to be that way. No small part of what makes the film work are the elaborate sets and cinematography. Director John Milius strove to give the film something of the flavor of a history that could have happened, and succeeded. In addition, he makes up for the lack of dialog by presenting a continuous flow of carefully orchestrated and framed film sequences.

I was struck while watching it this time how much the dialog and action work to build the thematic structure. Often events or dialog will foreshadow action to come. In Valeria’s death scene, she asks Conan to keep her warm. And in the next scene we find him building and lighting a funeral pyre where no fire had burnt before. In the background, the mound with its sacred stones echoes similar shapes seen throughout the film. This kind of thoughtful work is only to be expected of Milius and De Laurentis, but in 1982, it was far beyond the norm for this genre.

Two features are added for the DVD. The first is a running film analysis by Schwarzenegger and Milius, which is every bit as good as the movie itself. A the second is a feature on the film’s production done 20 years after the fact. It is quite interesting to hear what the acting and production teams thin about the film in retrospect.

Violent and sexy, the film’s core is built of constant action and spectacle, with very little dialog. Sudden moments of filmic stillness act to emphasize the intense and often gory fight scenes. This and several moments when there is apparent mistreatment of animals give the film its R rating. Of course, the controversy only added to the film’s popularity at the time. Even today, this manages to be a surprising film. By all means make and effort to seek it out.

Believe it or not, I just spent over five hours with this disk even though I already own the original DVD release. It was worth it. First off, the video is a(much)cleaner and sharper transfer, a marked improvement over the old disk. And the extras are great too. After watching the film the first time I actually sat through whole thing again again while listening to the director’s commentary, something I have not done with any other DVD. The extra footage, while only a few minutes, does add something to the ending. I liked it. And Milius’ comments about it made me appreciate it even more later. My only complaint might be to wish that the commentary had been extended to the outtakes and deleted scenes. I would have liked to hear more about the deleted King Osric scene and how it was originally intended to fit in the movie. Finally, the documentary “Conan Unchained” was a pleasant surprise. I expected the usual 15 minute “making of” promo dating back to the original release but it is a beefy, informative(and amusing)featurette with many recently filmed interviews with cast and crew. A fan’s wish come true. And speaking of wishes, that exchange between John Milius and Arnold about getting together sometime to make a third Conan….YES! Let’s get Conan on that throne! Anyway, while we’re waiting, we can all watch this one till the sun comes up like I did last night.

The Simpsons Movie features excellent animation, a good plot that moves along very well, great gags and awesome voiceovers by the cast. There are so many gags that there’s bound to be jokes in this movie that will amuse just about anyone!

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Simpsons Movie! Click Here

The action starts when Lake Springfield is practically destroyed by excessive pollution; and so the town must clean it up. They do! Unfortunately, however, things don’t stay that way–and there begins the REAL plot of this film. Homer (voiced by Dan Castellaneta) decides to take on a pig for a house pet. When Marge (voiced by Julie Kavner) casually asks Homer what he’s doing with the pig’s “leavings;” Homer takes Marge out back and shows her his “silo” full of pig “droppings.” Marge isn’t too happy; and eventually Homer realizes he MUST get rid of the festering silo. Naturally, where does Homer go to get rid of the silo? Lake Springfield! Once again the lake is unbelievably contaminated.

Russ Cargill (voiced by Albert Brooks) is in charge of the EPA and he sets out to rectify the problem. What happens? Springfield is enwrapped by a huge, impenetrable dome–and then wiped off the map. The residents of Springfield are furious at Homer; and sooner rather than later The Simpsons must flee. They go to Alaska in search of freedom from the infuriated residents of Springfield.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Simpsons Movie! Click Here

Worse yet, Russ Cargill and President Schwarzenegger (voiced by Harry Shearer) hatch a plan to bomb Springfield so that it will never again pose a problem. This really raises the stakes.

From here the plot can go anywhere. What will Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie do? Will they stay in Alaska where it’s safe or will they return to Springfield to try to rescue the people there from being killed by the bomb? Will Homer and Marge’s marriage be tested by all this strife? What will Bart think of Homer after this all becomes one huge mess? No plot spoilers here, folks–you’ll just have to watch the movie to find out!

The animation couldn’t be better. I was very impressed by the clarity and the sharpness of the images and colors. The voiceovers were outstanding as well. It seems like Matt Groening, director David Silverman and their crew can do no wrong.

In addition, the DVD comes loaded with a plethora of extras considering this is all on one single DVD. There are several deleted scenes; and there’s a very funny but brief extra entitled “Let’s All Go To The Lobby.” There are two commentaries for you to enjoy if you wish; and there are great gags all the way through the ending credits.

Overall, The Simpsons Movie is definitely one of the best comedies of 2007. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. Fans of The Simpsons will want this in their collections; and even people less familiar with The Simpsons television show will find great entertainment and many jokes here!

In the TV series, what you’ve got is something of a linear main-plot with a lot of sub- and mini-plots interwoven. And those plots revolve around the humor and comedy, kind of like the plot revolves around the sex in an x-rated movie-not that I would know, but just based on what I’ve heard. Anyway, this movie does not reflect this strip cartoon structure, which is actually the kind of material that Matt Groening started off doing. Anybody remember Life Is Hell comics? So with The simpsons movie what you’ve got is the reverse: more of a dominant main linear plot, with the comedy revolving around it much more than what you’ve got in the TV series. And this makes sense for a feature-length film, otherwise why make one, right?

Also, remember the film The Adams Family? A lot of people got caught up on the fact that it seemed choppy. It seemed choppy because they tried to do a strip cartoon format (TAF started off as a strip cartoon) with a full-length feature. It works fine for something short, like say 30 minutes or under, but can tire and confuse the audience if they get a solid hour and a half of it, and I think the makers of this film took that into consideration as they put together a film somewhat more plot-driven than its TV counterpart.

In a nutshell, they had to slow things down a little bit in order to work in a story line that was clear enough to keep the audience focused on the movie for the entire time. But there’s a lot that’s funny in this movie, typical Simpson’s stuff, along with one or two things that they probably wouldn’t even put on prime time. Plus it’s just cool to see a movie and have it be The Simpsons.

A landmark film in many respects, “Dr. No” (1962) introduced Ian Fleming’s 007 to cinema audiences. Despite the author’s initial objections, Sean Connery defined the character of James Bond with his remarkably self-assured performance. Ursula Andress’ iconic beauty and Joseph Wiseman’s restrained villainy were equally memorable. Thanks to the contributions of director Terence Young, set designer Ken Adam, editor Peter Hunt and composer John Barry, the 007 style was immediately established in this Jamaican adventure. Producers Harry Saltzman and Albert R. Broccoli should be applauded for getting the most out of their limited budget. “Dr. No” succeeds as an unpretentious spy thriller – minus the gadgetry and gimmicks in later Bond outings. The film’s impact on popular culture cannot be underestimated.

My comments apply only to the newly released Blu Ray version.

I will not review the film it’s self since everyone has no doubt seen it at least once.

I have waited 2 years for the Bond films to be released in a HD format, and the waite was worth it.

The picture quality of this old film is simply awesome. The color saturation, the “depth” and contrast are very film-like.

I felt like I was discovering the film for the very first time.

Watching it on my 60” display, it looked like I was seeing a brand new, fresh from the lab, film print in my own living room.

And it gets better, I am told (but havent viewed my copy yet) that Thunderball looks even better.

If you are a Connery James Bond fan, and own Blu Ray, this is a no-brainer.

Highest possible recommendation, and Amazon has it for a good price.

For the last few seasons, each new season of South Park became my favorite. The trend almost continued with Season 9 but I don’t think it is quite as solid as Season 8, but close. Still there are several slam-dunk episodes in this set: “Mr. Garrison’s Fancy New V—,” “The Losing Edge,” “The Death of Eric Cartman,” “Follow That Egg,” and “Bloody Mary.” Either “Mr. Garrison’s…,” “Follow That Egg,” or “Bloody Mary” is my favorite, it’s difficult to choose. There are other excellent eps as well like “Best Friends Forever” (which won an Emmy), “Erection Day,” “Two Days Before…,” and “Marjorine.” This set also has the controversial episode “Trapped in the Closet” about Tom Cruise and Scientology that caused the “Chef” Isaac Hayes falling out. Jam-packed with quality SP humor taking current events and issues waaaay over-the-top, here’s what you get:

“Die Hippie, Die”: This is one of my least favorites of this season. Cartman detects signs of a Hippie Music Jam Festival forming in South Park, but is put in jail for locking them in the basement. “Wing”: After Token wins a singing contest, the boys start a talent agency to try to cash in on Token’s potential royalties. When another agent steals him away, the boys sign a new talent: The City Wok guy’s wife who has a penchant for singing ABBA songs and has ties with the Asian Mafia.

“Best Friends Forever”: Emmy award-winner. Did any fan of the early days of South Park see that coming? Kenny is so good at playing “Heaven v. Hell” on PSP that heaven has him killed so he can leave earth and command their armies. Before the big showdown, doctors on earth revive him to a “tomato” state where the big debate ensues. Interesting take on the “pull the plug” issue.

“The Losing Edge”: The boys hate Little League and try to lose to end their season and Stan’s dad’s dreams…of beating up a father of the opposing team during the state championships. The Bat Dad: “You’re about to be bat dadded!” Hilarious!

Disc 2:

“The Death of Eric Cartman”: Cartman has done many bad things, but eating the skin off the Colonel’s chicken is the last straw. His friends all ignore him to the point where Cartman believes he is dead. He recruits the help of an ignorant Butters to try to give his soul peace to reach the other side.

“Erection Day”: Jimmy is psyched to win the school’s talent show but is having puberty issues. He goes on a quest to relieve his problem before his act, meeting Nut Gobbler. The Goth kids at the talent show play an anti-talent show song and then one of them says, “I hope we win.”

“Two Days Before the Day After Tomorrow”: Stan and Cartman drive a boat into a giant beaver dam flooding the nearby town of Beaverton. While Stan is burdened down by guilt about the Beaverton residents stranded on their rooftops, the folks of South Park blame the event on global warming and barricade themselves from impending doom.

“Marjorine”: Cartman convinces Butters to fake his own death and come back as the new girl in town so as to get invited to the girls’ slumber party and steal their mysterious fortune-telling device.

“Follow That Egg”: Excellent episode addressing the gay marriage issue as only SP can. “Mrs.” Garrison’s class is paired up with eggs to learn about parenting (Token’s team is given a brown egg). After Mr. Slave gets engaged to Big Gay Al, Mrs. Garrison goes on a campaign against gay marriage and conducts an experiment in his class.

Disc 3:

“Ginger Kids”: Cartman starts vicious rumors about kids with red hair and freckles and they begin to be discriminated against. To teach Cartman a lesson, Stan, Kyle and Kenny sneak into Cartman’s room, knock him out, and give him a ginger makeover. Cartman then starts the Ginger Separatist Movement. Cartman sees no irony in this.

“Trapped in the Closet”: The Church of Scientology believes Stan is the reincarnation of L. Ron Hubbard. When Stan doesn’t praise his acting skills, Hubbard-worshipper Tom Cruise hides away in Stan’s closet. Meanwhile, Stan learns some disturbing things about scientology. Isaac Hayes fall-out episode.

“Free Willzyx”: A performing Orca whale at the sea park can communicate with the boys who believe he must return to his native planet, the moon, or he will die. That composite sketch of the kids is great (especially Cartman and Kyle–although Kyle’s mother doesn’t think it is a good likeness).

“Bloody Mary”: Stan’s dad is busted for DUI and believes he has no power over his alcoholism disease. He needs a miracle. Good news! A statue of the Virgin Mary is bleeding out her…uh…posterior. Too funny!!!

“South Park” is one of the most clever series programs in the entire history of American television. Because Trey & Matt (the creaters, cartoonists, writers, voices & just about everything else) have a percise acuteness to satire and comedy. Each season it only gets better. This series has never “jumped the shark” because “South Park” is the type of series that doesn’t take themselves too serious and doesn’t try to be anything they’re not.

Season Nine (includes a total of fourteen eps) of this modern-day classic is hands down, bar none, perfect television viewing. Some of the highlights from this season include: Mrs. Garrison’s gender reassignment operation, the sweet sounds of Wing, Jimmy taking matters into his own hands and of course who could forget about Tom Cruise being trapped in the perpetual closet! But my favorite ep from this season revolves around my favorite “South Park” resident, Eric Cartman; in this installmant, Cartman found out what it was like to be dead when the other boys killed him off in “The Death of Eric Cartman!”

I cannot wait for the Season Eleven Set to come out, later this year. And, next week is the Season Twelve Series premieres on “South Park” on Comedy Central!
